So tonights post about the PancakeBot show you just how much fun you can have with microcontrollers (and other bits of technology) once you learn how to use them. A recent SlashGear post is about an Arduino-controlled pancake-printing 3D printer that prints out an Eiffel Tower. The PancakeBot is an open source project, so if you want to 3D print your pancakes, theres information out there to help you put together a slightly-wacky machine that will do just that.
The video for printing the Eiffel Tower is worth watching, if only to see how well-produced the video is and what a great job theyve done of getting the pancake printer to work.
But what I thought was even better was PancakeBots "Breakfast Gallop" video. I went to the projects website and checked out their blog. The video of a pancake horse riding across the countryside would be a priceless memory to make with your kids. After 3D printing the props for the video and after making the video, the kids get to eat the props! How much better can it get?
Our new flock of twenty-five laying chicks (including an all white Leghorn rooster) arrived last week. This coming spring we are striving for higher egg production so we ordered mostly Black Star females with a few Red Stars, Leghorns and Buff Orphingtons added to the mix. We have been looking into raising the chicks on a soured milk diet which means feeding the chicks raw milk that has clabbered or soured, meaning fermented. Clabbering raw milk is easy. We just fill a quart jar or two with some of the fresh milk from the mornings milking (either goat or cow will do), screw on a lid and leave on the window sill for a couple of days until the curds separate from the whey.
Raw milk is loaded with enzymes and probiotics. When raw milk starts to sour, it simply means that beneficial bacteria called probiotics have started to use up all the lactose or milk sugar which casues the milk to no longer taste sweet. Soured raw milk has a higher level of probiotics which have initiated the fermentation or clabbering of the milk. (By the way, this only works with raw milk. When store bought pasteurized milk goes bad it becomes a huge food borne illness risk to consume it and should be thrown out.)
All these probiotics can be used as a prophylactic against disease and illness, boosting the immune system and growing stronger, healthier birds. We are looking forward to an abundance of eggs in the spring. p.s. It is still an amazing thing to think of how much the family cow adds to the homestead, everyone on the farm benefits from the by products!

The tower farm keeps growing slowly and surely! Some plants seems that they are really liking it there, especially the collard greens. I Also am pretty sure that I need to add more light to the system. Also the compost tea "experiment" is continuing, and so far it does not seem to provide significant amount of nitrates. Here is a breakdown of the state of things from top to bottom.
On the top, the is a pepper seedling, It grew in the compost from the worm crate and I transferred the 2 leaf seedling into the vertical farm a little while ago. It now has 4 leaves, and seems quite happy there.
Next there is one of the collard greens that grew its longer leave from 7.5 cm to 10 cm now. It also has added new leaves. (see second photo)
Next there is the parley, I harvested half of the leaves last week (not much, but it was tasty). this week it put out 2 leaves (stimulated by the cut ?)(see second photo)
Next there was a small 3 leave seedling of parsley that died, not sure why, but it became suddenly totally dry.
Then the is the bok choy core that seems to grow too, and added a few new leaves in the last 3 weeks.
Another collard grows lower, it also have grew new leave regularly, but it is not as green as the one on the top of the tower. This is what makes me think I need more lights. The light are placed on the top. Notice on the picture how the collard on the left is not as intensly green as the one on the right.
Also There were a few green onions lower, but they died (except one that is higher in the tower) after I did the monthly cleanup. I have disturbed them, and they didnt like it, maybe added to insufficient light also participated, as they were not as green as the one closer to the top.
When I did the clean up there was a bit of a biofilm in the reservoir, internet sources are no agreeing whether it s good or bad, but logically, since we are dealing with a system full of life, I would expect such biofilm to develop.
For the water quality, I have hiked up the amount of ammonia to 4 ml for about a week, and there is now an obvious accumulation of ammonia and nitrate, with some traces of nitrite. I have back down the additions of ammonia as I would aim for an amount that gets quickly processed into nitrates. I am also wondering if this increase of ammonia may be in part linked to the cleanup - which may a killed some of the living film, releasing ammonia as it decomposes.
For the compost tea addition, I have kept increasing the amount of compost used. Yesterday, I have added 2.5 cups of compost to 4 cups of water, and "brewed" for 24h with aeration. I finally got around to get test strips to look at nitrates, and it does not show a significant amount of nitrate in the compost tea. However, the stips also measures general hardness (180 ppm) carbonate hardness (120ppm) pH (7.5) and nitrites (0 or maybe traces).
Finally, I seems that the Blog will pass the bar of 1000 views ! that is quite exiting, Last check I had 997 views!
Last weekend we spent our Sunday at the Albany Arts and Green Festival. Blessed with beautiful weather and a large crowd, we sold almost all our local organic honey, as well as many of the products from our Handcrafted Herbalim CSA.
There was a diverse grouping of booths at the festival; everything from solar/renewable energy to The Sierra club to The Alameda County Beekeepers Association. We spent some time promoting our classes, discussing our farm with interesting people, and benefiting from all the giveaways (fruit trees, environmental books, compost and organic vegi starts).

Both our honey and the model Warre hive we set up drew plenty of attention. It was a blast talking about bees with other beekeepers and hearing about many of the local apiaries in the area. The best part of the festival was networking with so many interesting, like minded people. Of course taking home peach, apricot, and cherry trees, comfrey, globe artichokes, mugwort, and a few more starts for the garden was pretty great too. Hurrah for the Green Festival!
Thought I would just put up some Pictures of our first garden that we put in when we bought this house. We did have an awesome potted Veggie garden at the last rental we had which we put down to using Wetpots and Worm castings. Unfortunately We lost our supply of cheap worm castings not long after buying here. As a result the plants never did as well and we gave up gardening for about 4 years. : (»
Large Wetpot Enveloped by roots. Inground, Small & Large Wetpots. The system was feed water from the above Garbage Bin reservoir. The Wetpots kept the plants going but due to our lack of knowledge and the before mentioned loss of our worm casting supply, the plants just never preformed that well. Knowing what we do now, I think we could give it a good shot and replicate our first results if we gardened in pots with Wetpots again. Worm Farm Update... We did a bit of an experiment to see how long it takes for the hungry little Fellas to go through their food.... On the 9th of December they were fed a processed mixture of Pineapple skin, ½ a Pumpkin that went manky in storage, Sweet Potato & other assorted kitchen scraps... The total weight was 2.3kg or 2300grams.. It took less than 5 days for the majority of the food to be consumed with only the larger "chunks" left... The reservoir was also drained & we got 1.5l of the darkest, "sweet" smelling worm juice/wee we have ever got... The farm on a whole has been relatively offensive odour, bug & ant free which is a great to see/smell...
Covered the last section of the Veggie patch yesterday...... With the days Supposed to be getting hotter/sunnier I thought I would get a jump on covering the last section....
Shall be planting the next lot of Lettuce & Zucchini up the back as it just gets to hot in Beds # 1 & 5 in the afternoon....

An employee inside Navy Yard reports that alarms are sounding and the buildings are on lockdown.

In 2013, a gunman shot who got into a building at the Navy Yard killed 12 people and injured three others. He was fatally shot by a Washington Metropolitan police officer.

The remaining $15.5 billion goes toward other places, including financing for big corporations, bank critics say.
Larger companies that have received Ex-Im Bank financing in the past include General Electric and Boeing. Spokespeople for both corporations were not immediately available for comment.
"Most of this goes to very successful, well-heeled companies that dont need the help in the first place," says Rep. Jeb Hensarling, Texas Republican and chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.

OF THE SUPREME PONTIFF
FRANCIS
ON THE JURISDICTION OF JUDICIAL AUTHORITIES OF VATICAN CITY STATE
IN CRIMINAL MATTERS
In our times, the common good is increasingly threatened by transnational organized crime, the improper use of the markets and of the economy, as well as by terrorism.
It is therefore necessary for the international community to adopt adequate legal instruments to prevent and counter criminal activities, by promoting international judicial cooperation on criminal matters.
In ratifying numerous international conventions in these areas, and acting also on behalf of Vatican City State, the Holy See has constantly maintained that such agreements are effective means to prevent criminal activities that threaten human dignity, the common good and peace.
With a view to renewing the Apostolic See’s commitment to cooperate to these ends, by means of this Apostolic Letter issued Motu Proprio, I establish that:
1. The competent Judicial Authorities of Vatican City State shall also exercise penal jurisdiction over:
a) crimes committed against the security, the fundamental interests or the patrimony of the Holy See;
b) crimes referred to:
- in Vatican City State Law No. VIII, of 11 July 2013, containing Supplementary Norms on Criminal Law Matters;
- in Vatican City State Law No. IX, of 11 July 2013, containing Amendments to the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code;
when such crimes are committed by the persons referred to in paragraph 3 below, in the exercise of their functions;
c) any other crime whose prosecution is required by an international agreement ratified by the Holy See, if the perpetrator is physically present in the territory of Vatican City State and has not been extradited.
2. The crimes referred to in paragraph 1 are to be judged pursuant to the criminal law in force in Vatican City State at the time of their commission, without prejudice to the general principles of the legal system on the temporal application of criminal laws.
3. For the purposes of Vatican criminal law, the following persons are deemed “public officials”:
a) members, officials and personnel of the various organs of the Roman Curia and of the Institutions connected to it.
b) papal legates and diplomatic personnel of the Holy See.
c) those persons who serve as representatives, managers or directors, as well as persons who even de facto manage or exercise control over the entities directly dependent on the Holy See and listed in the registry of canonical juridical persons kept by the Governorate of Vatican City State;
d) any other person holding an administrative or judicial mandate in the Holy See, permanent or temporary, paid or unpaid, irrespective of that person’s seniority.
4. The jurisdiction referred to in paragraph 1 comprises also the administrative liability of juridical persons arising from crimes, as regulated by Vatican City State laws.
5. When the same matters are prosecuted in other States, the provisions in force in Vatican City State on concurrent jurisdiction shall apply.
6. The content of article 23 of Law No. CXIX of 21 November 1987, which approves the Judicial Order of Vatican City State remains in force.
This I decide and establish, anything to the contrary notwithstanding.

That was from the large Thunder storm that came through Ipswich on Thursday the 16th of December... It freaked the Dog & Koo out a bit... The only damage to speak of was a branch from the neighbours tree damaging out TV antenna.... The same tree was kind enough to donate a branch to make garden stakes out of... Looks like the rain will be here until early to mid January so I dont think many major work will be occurring out the back for a while, only daily maintenance with a few seeds going in here & there... : (»
GRUBS !!!
The rain & the heat have been ideal conditions for the Cabbage Butterflies & their offspring... I have been out daily collecting the grubs for the Chooks & chasing the Butterflies around the patch with the lid from a bucket... At least neighbours are getting to have a laugh...: )» The Radishes appear to be the favourite food with the Kohlrabi coming in second.. We also have Ants helping the Aphids get established onto a few Eggplants at the moment... It has been hard to keep up with the Neem spraying as the rain would just wash it off within 12hours & it needs a bit longer on the pest/plant to work its magic...
Gifts From the garden...
The Panama Red Passion fruit have finally made an appearance... Looks like we will have more than enough for our needs as well as a few gifts for family & friends... The other surprise for us has been the Cucumbers... We have gotten about 10 off over the last few weeks & it looks like we will be getting at least 6 a week for the next few... Best result we have had from Cues at this house... We have lost nearly all the other Cucurbits we have planted to powdery mildew except for the Cues & a few Pumpkins that were all sown as seed... Dont think we will be buying seedlings from this family again... Summer Beauties...
This is the Dragon fruit Cactus that lives on our fence line with the neighbours... Every Summer we get a few flushes of flowers but only 1 fruit has set in 7 or so years we have been here... Very spectacular...
Weekly Harvest... Mini Roma Tomatos, Cucumbers, Chillies, Shallots, Radishes, Baby Carrots, Eggplants, Strawberries, Parsley, Basil, Sage, Thyme, Beans, Beetroot leaves, Silverbeet, & 3 eggs a day except for 1 when there were only 2...
Since I last posted on Friday the of December we have had 87mm of rain... Great for the gardens & water table but I think we may be in for another 1974 level flood event if it keeps up all through January as predicted by some...
Have wanted to make up some straw/hay bale garden beds for a while now & am happy I finely have..
The second bed is in the process of being planted & have also started a small no dig straw/hay bed for some potatoes to go into.. I love the idea of being able to grow in the straw as it slowly turns into compost & humus that can be added to other beds once it finishes breaking down...

Finely got around to harvesting the seed from the long purple Eggplant that was on the bush in the patch... After looking in the Seed Savers book we decided to just scrape the seeds out rather than cutting into cubes, whizzing in a blender then floating the seeds out... We also purchased a large white variety at the markets on Sunday so some seeds will be collected from it soon... I think I may have cooked the last lot of seeds we sowed in punnets after putting them in a make shift grow box... Some more were sown in other punnets over the long weekend... In punnets I planted, Broccoli, Albert x 6 Cauliflower, All Year Round x 6 Cauliflower, Purple Sicilian x 6 Kohlrabi, White Vienna x 6 Kohlrabi, Purple Vienna x 6 Lettuce, Mignonette mixed x6 Cabbage, Sugarloaf x 6 Kale, Dwarf Green x 3 Kale Red Russian x 3 Eggplant, Rosa Bianca x 4 Eggplant Udumalapet x 4 Parsley, Italian flat Leaf x 6 These will just be left in a sunny spot in the yard in a tray to germinate... I also sowed 6 or 7 Blue Lake climbing beans under the trellis in Bed #8 after pulling out the Cucumbers... They just were not preforming well which I think is due to the Tomatoes that grew there before them... Not very friendly to each other those 2 plants...
Compost & Worms... We harvested all the larger fruit from the Zucchinis to make up a batch of sauce & found 3 to be fairly badly blown with some sort of fruit fly... Would be nice to be able to spray the garden knowing the Neem is going to stick & do the job it should... Such is as they didnt get wasted & were turned into worm food...
These guys are mating & increasing in volume so fast that B? is thinking about getting a bathtub so we can increase the output of castings for the patch & to help some others out... I have 3 bags of composted manure blend to feed them as soon as they have finished feasting on the current batch... The 8 bags of manure I was ageing for a few weeks has now been blended with Blood n Bone & cracker dust then added to the drums for3-4 weeks... I used some of the leftover compost & castings solids/slops from the compost tea to help speed things along with its added beneficial bacteria... This is the first time I have screened the manure before mixing it so it will be interesting to see if that helps with the process at all...
Yep... Not afraid to say it... Im Addicted... **Sigh** But in my defence 1 is to be turned into a worm farm...
½ of the other will be used to make a Wicking Barrel for some Strawberries I saved from being overrun by Cabbages last year & a stunning Pink Flowered Strawberry was bought yesterday at the local markets... I did go looking for some Celery but all stalls were out or didnt stock as they think it to warm to plant it at the moment... Might have to venture to The Chain Store that shall remain nameless to see if they have any as most local nurseries are not stocking as many veggie seedlings as they once did... Planting out the Babies...
Saturday we planted out the Cabbage (Red Dutch) into Bed #1(left) & Kohlrabi (White Vienna) in Bed #5 (right) after harvesting the Beetroot & some Lettuce... The Kent Pumpkin you can see growing between the 2 beds in the Picture to the left is going to be left in with the Tomatoes & Capsicums... It can grow down the path & onto the "lawn" between us & the neighbours... I dont hold out much hope for anything planted in the "Pumpkin Bed"... It was filled with the same "Premium Soil mix" as the Spice Barrels & none of the plants look like they are doing as well as they could.... The plants have been feed worm juice & Seasol this week so we can only wait & see... We also put in a few rows of Darwin & Red Mignonette lettuces into Bed #4 as well as some Pak Choi into Bed #3 to fill in some space between failed Beetroot & the slow growing Eggplant seedlings... The Ginger & Galangal Barrels didnt have the soil changed in them.... We had a bit of look at them & they appear to be draining alright as they were ½ filled with the Soil mix we made & only had the last 10-15cm of dodgy "Premium Mix" ... Will just need to keep an eye on them... The plot as a whole is starting to come along nicely... The Lemon tree is covered with fruit at the moment.. This is only the second year it has fruited in the 6 or so years we have had it.... We have Eggplants fruiting, Tomatoes starting to ripen, the "Rainbow" Silverbeet have bounced back, the Beans are producing a meal worth every day or so & there will be a few salads made with thinned Beetroot & Silverbeet seedlings this week....The Carrots are still being thinned out & being used in a few dishes... Made a really great Golden curry with some Carrots & our stored Sweet Potato...
Our young friend has been hanging around a lot & is getting quite used to us being in the garden with him in his tree... Have tried to find some curl grubs to feed him but they appear to be hiding to well...
This weeks harvest.... Beetroot, Lettuce, Zucchini, Shallots, Baby Dragon/All Seasons Carrots, Strawberries, Beans, Eggplant, Bay leaf, Basil, 3 eggs a day & some Lemongrass to make Tea with... Rain.... 5.5 mm this week....
The "DIVISION & SEPARATION" meme is seriously cranked on high right now, and Im watching movements and groups being torn apart. Not by by outsiders, but by rabid "believers" who are ready to defend their immovable belief without ever listening or considering anything else that is being put forward.
There are certain templates that are continuously used to DIVIDE the people, to break up movements and groups, and tear down systems that are not part of the "Plans" of the Controllers. "They" have used these same templates over and over again, wielding them with repeated precision time after time... and yet, people STILL fall for it.
It is amazing to me that so many people are, or are getting, caught up in belief systems so strongly that it becomes like a Religion... just without the god stuff. Anytime a person feels the need to defend their beliefs or personal choices with manic bashing and almost virulent denunciation of anything that goes against their belief.... its time to take a good long look at it to see if you have been sucked into a new belief system that fosters cultish, religious-type control mechanisms.
When people cant move beyond their "Belief" system- regardless of whether its based on religion, spirituality, politics, ethnicity, science, media, advocacy, activism - or any other system that mandates a single approach and a single viewpoint....When people are incapable of even LISTENING to anything outside of their perceived "Truth", then they have shut themselves off to any new information, ideas, perceptions, facts, or theories. (god forbid someone comes along with a different theory or a new idea within the group!). When movements and groups are torn apart with dogmatic statements of absolutisms and radical rhetoric, then the PTB have won. At that point, all hope is lost. Because if you are incapable of accepting new ideas, new comprehensions, new information, new perceptions, then you might as well just roll over and give up.
The "Truth" may be "out there", but no ONE person HERE has it.
There are NO leaders to blindly follow.
NO ONE HAS ALL THE "FACTS" OR "TRUTHS". NO ONE HAS ALL THE ANSWERS.
The moment you shut yourself off from investigating and researching, the moment you close your mind to anything not within your circle of belief, and lock yourself up against anything new, you are then missing out on the pieces of the puzzle that you just might need to be able to Comprehend what the fuck is going on.
When you get to the point that you are ready to argue with anything that is outside your accepted group/beliefs/absolutes- Blindly, without even for a single moment being open to other new perspectives and input..... then you have LOST.
When you find yourself in that place where you are vehemently demanding that people accept YOUR "truth" and YOUR "Belief", and when you are willing to insult and rage against anyone who dares to offer an alternative thought or theory, then YOU are now the one perpetuating division and separation, sometimes even while preaching AGAINST division and separation.
.... It literally boggles my mind to see how many brilliant people just keep falling into this trap.
My friends, it is vitally important right now that we all work together. It is vitally important that we drop the division tactics, see the separation template for what it is, and stop following ANYTHING or ANYONE to the EXCLUSION of anything or anyone else.
Let me be very clear here: The need to focus on UNITY does NOT mean Blindly Following or Agreeing on EVERYTHING. Believe it or not, you do NOT have to agree on absolutely EVERYTHING in order to have UNITY. You do NOT have to have a LEADER to have UNITY. You do NOT need to have a 10 point plan, or a mandate of epic change laid out in a power point presentation to have UNITY. If anything..... those things are the very basic beginnings of Division.
All we need to have UNITY, is to AGREE to STAND TOGETHER, regardless of beliefs, regardless of whatever group or movement or network we are part of, regardless of leaders, regardless of those perpetuating division & separation.
When we can STAND TOGETHER, Without expectations or demands of beliefs or strict absolutes.....
When we can STAND TOGETHER, Without trying to perpetuate our own personal perceptions over everyone....
When we can STAND TOGETHER Without followers, and without BEing a follower, without leaders, and without BEing a leader....
When we can STAND TOGETHER and Accept, without Judgement....
But what I thought was even better was PancakeBots "Breakfast Gallop" video. I went to the projects website and checked out their blog. The video of a pancake horse riding across the countryside would be a priceless memory to make with your kids. After 3D printing the props for the video and after making the video, the kids get to eat the props! How much better can it get?

The tower farm keeps growing slowly and surely! Some plants seems that they are really liking it there, especially the collard greens. I Also am pretty sure that I need to add more light to the system. Also the compost tea "experiment" is continuing, and so far it does not seem to provide significant amount of nitrates. Here is a breakdown of the 
On the top, the is a pepper seedling, It grew in the compost from the worm crate and I transferred the 2 leaf seedling into the vertical farm a little while ago. It now has 4 leaves, and seems quite happy there. 
Then the is the bok choy core that seems to grow too, and added a few new leaves in the last 3 weeks.
Another collard grows lower, it also have grew new leave regularly, but it is not as green as the one on the top of the tower. This is what makes me think I need more lights. The light are placed on the top. 
Also There were a few green onions lower, but they died (except one that is higher in the tower) after I did the monthly cleanup. I have disturbed them, and they didnt like it, maybe added to insufficient light also participated, as they were not as green as the one closer to the top.
For the water quality, I have hiked up the amount of ammonia to 4 ml for about a week, and there is now an obvious accumulation of ammonia and nitrate, with some traces of nitrite. I have back down the additions of ammonia as I would aim for an amount that gets quickly processed into nitrates. I am also wondering if this increase of ammonia may be in part linked to the cleanup - which may a killed some of the living film, releasing ammonia as it decomposes.
For the compost tea addition, I have kept increasing the amount of compost used. Yesterday, I have added 2.5 cups of compost to 4 cups of water, and "brewed" for 24h with aeration. I finally got around to get test strips to look at nitrates, and it does not show a significant amount of nitrate in the compost tea. However, the stips also measures general hardness (180 ppm) carbonate hardness (120ppm) pH (7.5) and nitrites (0 or maybe traces).
On the 9th of December they were fed a processed mixture of Pineapple skin, ½ a Pumpkin that went manky in storage, Sweet Potato & other assorted kitchen scraps... The total weight was 2.3kg or 2300grams.. It took less than 5 days for the majority of the food to be consumed with only the larger "chunks" left...
The reservoir was also drained & we got 1.5l of the darkest, "sweet" smelling worm juice/wee we have ever got... The farm on a whole has been relatively offensive odour, bug & ant free which is a great to see/smell...
